What Does Your Delegate Actually Do?

Most people know they have a state delegate, but few can explain exactly what their delegate does, how it's different from their county council member, and why it matters for their daily life. Bobby Henry believes you deserve to understand the job before you choose who fills it.

1

Your Delegate & Education

Your Maryland delegate votes on the Blueprint for Maryland's Future, the state's school funding formula. That formula determines how much money reaches your child's school, how many teachers are in the building, and whether programs like pre-K and career and technical education are available. When District 24's delegate fights for fair funding, your child's classroom gets smaller, your child's teachers get better paid, and your child's opportunities grow.

2

Your Delegate & Public Safety

Your delegate controls the state budget for Maryland State Police, community policing grants, and criminal justice reform. When crime happens in District 24, it's the state delegate who votes on whether more resources go to local law enforcement, whether diversion programs get funded, and whether the laws on the books actually keep communities safe.

3

Your Delegate & Your Property Taxes

Maryland's delegate can introduce bills that affect how your property is assessed and what exemptions are available. If you're a homeowner in Seat Pleasant, Glenarden, or Lake Arbor, your delegate's vote on tax policy directly affects what you pay every year.

4

Your Delegate & Federal Workers

More than 73,000 Prince George's County residents work for the federal government. When federal agencies downsize, your state delegate can introduce legislation to provide tax relief, extend state benefits, and fund retraining programs. Your delegate is your line of defense at the state level.

5

Your Delegate & Healthcare

Your delegate votes on Medicaid expansion, hospital funding, and the healthcare workforce pipeline. When UMCRMC needs state support, when prescription drug costs need to come down, when communities need more providers, that's your delegate's vote.

6

Your Delegate vs. Your County Council Member

Your county council member handles local zoning, county budgets, and local services. Your delegate operates at the state level: they vote on state law, the state budget, and policies that affect every county in Maryland.

Think of it this way: your council member decides where the stop sign goes. Your delegate decides how much the state pays to pave the road it's on.
